The word
gaudete stems from Latin, meaning "rejoice." Gaudete Sunday is the third Sunday of Advent, and the color to celebrate joyful feast days is rose. Though Advent is a season of penitential preparation for the coming of the Lord, the penitential exercises are suspended on Gaudete Sunday to rejoice in the Redemption.
